Wisconsin was the 30th state admitted to the Union, on May 29, 1848. It is the 23rd largest state with 65,498 people. Its population of 5,363,675 ranks it 20th in the country. A recent census shows that the population is roughly 90% white, 6% black with the remaining population broken down into other categories. The majority ancestry group is German. As with most of the country, a vast majority of the state is Christian. It is believed that the name Wisconsin comes from an “Ojibwe” word from “little muskrat home.”

Most of Wisconsin’s economy comes from dairy farming (heavily weighted toward cheese production), thus earning the state’s residents the nickname ‘Cheeseheads.’ The state also produces large amount of other agricultural products and is home to many well known brands including Oscar Mayer and Tombstone Pizza.
Another obvious industry in Wisconsin is beer production. Miller Brewing calls Milwaukee its home. Miller produces such well know brands as Miller Genuine Draft, Miller High Life and Milwaukee's Best. Many other companies have a strong presence in the state as well.
Not so well known is Wisconsin’s large and diverse healthcare industry. GE Healthcare, for example is a major employer. In fact, health care companies make up several of Milwaukee’s 10 largest employers.
Wisconsin also has a long history in professional sports as well. Perhaps the most famous team from the state is the Green Bay Packers. They are famous for their legacies in the 70’s and for holding the most championships as well. The Milwaukee Brewers baseball team also calls Wisconsin home. Wisconsin’s basketball team is the Milwaukee Bucks.
The state also has several well known and well respected universities, including Marquette University, the University of Wisconsin, and Beloit College.
The city Wisconsin Dells is also famous nationally. It’s a popular tourist destination with countless miniature golf courses and water parks.
