Because of differences in altitude and location, the climate of New York is varied. The coldest part of the state is in the Champlain Valley. Here the average temperatures are about 10 degrees lower than those in the New York City area. Most of the state is subject to sudden changes in temperature, but extreme temperatures do not last long. The climate is changeable with moderate rainfall throughout the year. During the summer, heat waves are common, with temperatures staying at over 99°F for several days. New York is favored by plenty of rain and snow in all parts of the state. The heaviest rainfall occurs in the southeast. The greatest amount of snow east of the Rocky Mountains falls on the Tug Hill Plateau in the northern part of the state.
As of 2006, New York was the third largest state in population after California and Texas, with an estimated population of 19,306,183. This represents an increase of 329,362, or 1.7%, since the year 2000; it includes a natural increase since the last census of 601,779 people (1,576,125 births minus 974,346 deaths) and a decrease due to net migration of 422,481 people out of the state. Immigration from outside the United States resulted in a net increase of 820,388 people, and migration within the country produced a net loss of about 800,213
New York City is a global economic center, with its business, finance, trading, law, and media organizations influential worldwide. The city is also an important cultural center, with many museums, galleries, and performance venues. As the home of the United Nations, the city is a hub for international diplomacy. New York is also always growing as a trading city. Much of New York is built on the three islands of Manhattan, Staten Island, and western Long Island, making land scarce and encouraging a high population density.
