The capital of New Mexico is Santa Fe. New Mexico has a population of just fewer than two million people. New Mexico was once a state of Mexico under the Spanish viceroyalty of New Spain. It was also inhabited by a large number of indigenous Native American peoples. Consequently, today New Mexico has the highest percentage of Hispanic Americans, both immigrants and descendents of the original Spanish rulers, as well as the second highest percentage of Native American residents.
