New Jersey is a state in the Northeast of the United States of America. It is named after the island of Jersey in the English Channel. It was admitted as the third state in the union on December 18th, 1787. One of the original 13 colonies that declared independence from British rule, New Jersey has a proud, if often not thought about, history.
Many people may not know that important Revolutionary War battles were fought in the Keystone state, such as the battle of Trenton. It was one in a series of victories for the continental army over the British Red Coats. In fact, the continental army crossed the state so many times during the war that New Jersey was given the nickname, “The Crossroads of the Revolution”.
Oftentimes overshadowed by its neighbor to the north, New York-- New Jersey nonetheless has plenty to boast, nothing more so than its population of over 8 million inhabitants, which makes it the most densely populated and 8th largest state in the country. Oddly enough, even with such a large and densely packed population, New Jersey doesn’t have a city that ranks in the top 30 in terms of size in the United States.
To the south, Jersey has another famous neighbor, Pennsylvania. For many people, New Jersey is the place that occupies the land while you are driving up the east coast between Philadelphia and New York.
In modern times, New Jersey was made famous by rock and roll star Bruce Springsteen, author of the famous song, “Born in the USA.”
New Jersey has a humid but temperate climate that is highlighted by muggy summers and rather cold winters. All in all, New Jersey has become an attractive place to live for many Americans, and is one of the fastest growing states.
