As one of the original thirteen colonies of the Americas, North Carolina was home not only to the first English colony but also to the first English child to be born in North America, Virginia Dare, after which Dare county is named. It boats a approximate population of 8,856,505 as of 1 July 2006, in addition to various climates that range from humid continental on its border to the west with the Appalachian mounts to its humid subtropical eastern coastline more than 300 miles away. For the most part however this Southern state is found in a humid subtropical zone and borders with South Carolina on the south, Georgia on the southwest, Tennessee on the west, Virginia on the north, and the Atlantic Ocean on the east. Due to its diverse climate, North Carolina is home to More than 120 species of trees, which is more than can be found from Scandinavia to the Mediterranean. The first permanent European settlers of North Carolina were British colonists who migrated south from Virginia, but the area was originally inhabited by indigenous peoples of the regions that include Cherokee, Tuscarora, Cheraw, Pamlico, Meherrin, Coree, Machapunga, Cape Fear Indians, Waxhaw, Saponi, Tutelo, Waccamaw, Lumbee, Coharie, and Catawba.

North Carolina dominates the national market in terms of its production of tobacco and is also a national leader when it comes to agriculture, financial services and manufacturing. Its industrial output principally features textiles, chemicals, electrical equipment, paper and pulp/paper products and even today remains the nation's largest textile employer. The state's agricultural outputs include poultry and eggs, tobacco, hogs, milk, nursery stock, cattle, sweet potatoes, and soybeans.The information and biotechnology industries are similarly important and ahve experienced significant growth since the creation of the Research Triangle Park (RTP) in the 1950s.
Charlotte, North Carolina´s largest city has enjoyed a reputation for rugged individualism since its inception. Founded in 1768, the town was named to honor England's Queen Charlotte wife of the new King George III, against whom the city would revolt less than a decade later. The city has come a long way however and Charlotte's banking industry is currently the second largest banking center in the nation after New York. It is home to Wachovia and Bank of America and the metro is home to 5 other Fortune 500 companies.
