Michigan employees the highest amount of technical services and has a large economy in manufacturing, life sciences, and information technology. It is also a large powerhouse and creator of the automobile industry. While the estimated gross product of the state was around $372 billon in the year 2004, its per capita income was $31,178 according to a 2003 estimate. Tourism is also a big part of the state’s income, with the high quantity of lakes/water sources there; Michigan ranks high in commercial and sports fishing, as well as other types of water based activities.
It has more of a humid continental climate, and 2 distinct regions. It also receives a far amount of snow in the winter due to the moisture in the state. There are about 30 days of thunderstorms a year, resulting in around 17 tornadoes a year.
Michigan became part of the U.S. on January 26, 1837. Its name comes from a Native American word, ¨Michigana¨; which means great lake. A common day nickname for the state is the Wolverine State. A famous actor/comedian from the state is Tim Allen, better known for his role as Tim Taylor on the sitcom ¨Home Improvement¨.
