Maine is bordered by Canada on the north and on the south and west by New Hampshire. To the east of Maine lies the Atlantic Ocean. It is the 39th biggest state in the USA and is in the northernmost portion of both New England and the eastern United States. The state capital is Augusta. The first European settlement in Maine was in 1604 by a French party. It was admitted to the Union as the 23rd state on March 15, 1820 as part of the Missouri Compromise.
It has an estimated population of 1,321,505, making it the 40th biggest state in the USA. There are 22 cities in this state and 424 towns, as well as countless numbers of smaller communities spread throughout its 16 counties. More than half the population lives on less than one-seventh of the land, within 25 mi of the Atlantic coast, and almost half of the state is virtually uninhabited. Half of Maine's population is classified as urban, although much of the urban population lives in towns and small cities. The state's major cities are Portland, Bangor, and Lewiston-Auburn. The most important manufactured products are cardboard boxes, paper bags, wood pulp, and paper. Fishing, particularly the catching of finfish and lobster, is a major industry in Maine today.
