The climate of Louisiana is humid and subtropical, which means that its summers are long, hot and humid, while on average the winters are short and mild. Those characteristics are due to the influence of the Gulf of México. The average temperatures in the summer fluctuate between 100 and 105F and, in winter, between 65 and 60F.
Louisiana is a state which has a mixture of cultures, especially the Louisiana Creole people and the French-speaking Cajun. The Creole are a blending of French, German, Spanish and Senegal people, who came to Louisiana before the Louisiana Purchase. Cajuns are the descendents of Arcadians, a French-speaking people of what are now New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, in Canada. The third culture in Louisiana is the Islenos. They are descendants of Canary Islanders who migrated to Louisiana around 1770. Because of the mixture of cultures, there are many languages in Louisiana, as of 2000, 91.2% residents age 5 and older, speak English and 4.8% French. Spanish is spoken by 2.5% of the population, Vietnamese ranges at 0.6% and German 0.2%. Louisiana, due to the French colonial heritage, has a unique culture, as viewed by many of the spoken languages there. Legally, French and English are both official languages spoken in Louisiana.
