The name Iowa came after the Native American people of the tribe Iowa also known as Ioway. The state capital of Iowa is Des Moines, which can be found inside of Polk County. Iowa also has other 98 counties. Iowa is also known as the “Tall Corn State” or “Hawkeye State”.
The area that Iowa covers is ranked as the 26th largest state in the US, with 56.272 Sq miles, a width of 310 miles, and a length of 199 miles with a total population of 2.926.324 habitants.
The State of Iowa, like a lot of other Midwestern states, has a humid continental climate, with really high extremes of heat and cold. The average temperature at the state capital (Des Moines) is 50 degrees, sometimes exceeded with ranges as high as 100 degrees in the summer and as low as 8 degrees in the winter. Iowa has near to 50 thunderstorms a year, some very severe with hail and high winds that normally average 37 tornados per year, mostly during spring and summer time.
In its economy, Iowa has an income per capital of U$S28, 340 a year. This State produces the highest amount of ethanol a year, with an industrial output of food, processing, machinery, chemical products and electric equipment, having as a main agricultural staple: corn, hogs, soybeans, oats, cattle and dairy.
In Education, the state had the second highest average SAT score in the US, and tied second place in regard to ACT scores. The current Educational system is under discussion, the plans are to move from 180 days of school to a more year round system.
The Iowa Flag resembles the flag of France. It was adopted on 1921, and on the middle white stripe, it has a bald eagle that carries a blue streamer on its beak with this motto: Our Liberties We Prize, and Our Rights We will Maintain.
