Delaware, located on the Atlantic Coast in the Mid-Atlantic and Southern regions of the United States of America, was the first state to ratify the federal Constitution (December 7, 1787), becoming the first state in the Union.
It is the second smallest state in the United States after Rhode Island with a total area of 1,982 square miles. It is bordered by Maryland, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey. The state is subdivided into three counties: from north to south, New Castle, Kent County and Sussex. The capital of Delaware is Dover, but in terms of power and wealth, the richest city there is Greenville with a reported $83,223 of per capita income. However, Dover does contain some things of importance, such as one of the biggest Air Forces bases to be found in the U.S., the Dover Air Force Base.
Delaware’s climate is moderate year round. Average monthly temperatures range from 75.8 to 32.0 degrees. Average temperature in the summer months is 74.3 degrees. About 57% of the days are sunny. Annual precipitation is approximately 45 inches.
It is the 46th most populous state, according to the Census Bureau for 2005, with 843,524. Despite this, it is the 7th most densely populated state with a population density of 320 more people per square mile than the national average, ranking ahead of states like Florida, California, and Texas.
Major industries found in Delaware today are chemical manufacturing, food canning, and processing of fruits and vegetables. Some of its agricultural outputs are poultry, soybeans, numerous dairy products and corn, while its industrial outputs are chemical, paper, rubber, and plastic products, as well as processed foods.
