The largest city in Connecticut is Bridgeport. A natural rivalry sprung up between the New Haven and Hartford regions as they used to split the state’s capital. Hartford is now the full time capital. Other notable cites include, New London, New Britain, Danbury, Waterbury, and Stamford. There are a total of 169 incorporated towns in Connecticut.
Connecticut is bordered by the Long Island Sound to the south, Massachusetts to the north, New York State to the west and Rhode Island to the east. The southwestern part of the state forms part of the New York City metro area.
Winters are cold with an average snowfall of 25-100”, and summers are hot and humid. The most severe weather is usually thunderstorms in the summer months and Nor’easters, or heavy snowstorms, in the winter. Tornadoes, Hurricanes and Tsunamis are uncommon.
For all its wealth, Connecticut is not home to any major professional sports teams. Hartford lost the NHL’s Whalers in 1997, where they became the Hurricanes of Carolina. However, there are many important colleges and universities in Connecticut, such as the University of Connecticut and the United States Coast Guard Academy.
Connecticut is officially known as the “Constitution State”, but is popularly referred to as the “Nutmeg State”. The state’s name is abbreviated as Conn., or CT.
