People of European ancestry have a strong presence in the northwestern Ozarks and the central part of the state. African Americans live mainly in the fertile southern and eastern parts of the state. Arkansans of British and German ancestry are mostly found in the far northwestern Ozarks near the Missouri border.
The State of Arkansas was admitted to the Union as the 25th state on June 16, 1836 and the 13th slave state.
Geographically, it is composed of very diverse regions with mountainous areas, valleys and the eastern lowlands along the Mississippi River. Despite the fact that Arkansas usually has a humid subtropical climate, it is known for its occasional extreme weather given that the state has about 60 days of thunderstorms. It is part of Tornado Alley and has been struck by a few of the most destructive tornadoes in U.S. history.
The state's agriculture outputs are poultry and eggs, soybeans, sorghum, cattle, cotton, rice, hogs, and milk. Its industrial outputs are food processing, electric equipment, fabricated metal products, machinery, paper products, bromine, and vanadium.
Tourism is also very important to the Arkansas economy. Arkansas annually attracts visitors from across the nation and abroad. Many are drawn to its abundant opportunities for outdoor adventures and to its natural beauty, as seen in the state's waterfalls, tour caverns and wild caving experiences, forested mountain trails and scenic drives.
